An expressive mask, most likely from the area of the Sepik river basin. Such masks were not worn on the face, but were hung on the man's house in the tribe. The mask expressed strength and gave protection to the home. An outstanding example of original tribal art, residues of coloring pigment, large size, traces of erosion and deterioration over time. The previous owner bought the mask in 1997 at Martinot-Savignat-Antoine (Pontoise), November 8, lot # 57.
